About Us

Grey’s Nishikigoi Ltd is run by Father and Son, Stephen and Anthony Grey.

We are registered with Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) CEFAS to import and wholesale koi, and proud to be working with Yume Koi Japan striving to import the finest quality koi direct from Japan.

We both started this brilliant hobby back in 2002, and first started showing our koi in 2005, becoming well established on the show scene with great success, achieving all the major champion awards at local and national level, from Grand Champion to Baby Champion, and also the first Shinkokai award at a koi show in the UK.  This show success is something we aim to continue with our business.

We first visited Japan in 2006 and have travelled there many times since, extensively traveling around the heritage sites and gardens and of course visiting Niigata and southern koi farms and breeders. From 2016 we have been visiting the southern breeders of Japan every year, with the help of Mike Snaden of Yume Koi Japan, building further relationships with Mike and the southern breeders. Mike helped educate us of true Tategoi and gain further knowledge and experience about selecting koi for the future with true Jumbo potential.

National Koi Show

We have endeavoured to learn about choosing koi for the future. Building on our knowledge and through what we have learned thanks to Mike, and selecting our own koi to grow ourselves, we have learned a considerable amount in not only selecting koi for the future but also how to raise them, so they thrive in their environment.

We want to develop Grey’s Nishikigoi on our continued reputation. Since 2002 we have both strived to learn and gain knowledge about all the aspects of Nishikigoi and this fantastic hobby we are both immensely passionate about.

This passion to learn more meant we both went beyond to gain knowledge, skills and qualifications in the hobby.

Both Stephen and Anthony have completed certificated koi keeper’s courses, with Stephen being the first in the UK to complete the koi keeper’s scholarship qualification, which consisted of 10 modules,

Anatomy.

Physiology.

Biosecurity, Quarantine and record Keeping.

Nutrition.

Pond Construction.

Pond Filtration.

Water Quality.

Diagnosis & Treatment.

Lab part 1, Chemicals, Testing, equipment, Microscopes, etc.

Lab part 2, which is an approximate 3-hour conference call discussing pond scenarios, legality & pond keepers assistance, etc.

Us Judging

We are both members of British Koi Keepers Society (BKKS) and Northeast Koi Club (NEKC) since 2002 and have each held many positions and volunteered in both societies. Most recently Stephen having been the NEKC Club Chairman and Show Chairman, with Anthony acting as the Vice Show Chairman, with them both resurrecting the NEKC annual koi show and built it to be The North of England Koi Show. Since 2002 we have been volunteering at the BKKS National Show, first starting on the centre ring water team then for many years part of the show benching team.

So why buy a ‘Grey’s Koi’ from us? Every koi we select we do so as if it’s for ourselves, and we are deeply proud of the koi we have for sale. Everything we have learned we have done through our own physical experience and trials. This therefore allows us to understand each koi and ensure we can match the koi for our customer’s requirements.

We’ll always be hobbyist at heart first and foremost, looking after all our koi in that manner and ensuring they grow according to their age and are in top condition. For this reason, we look at our business from the outside in, “We’re hobbyist, so what do we want from a dealer”.

So…what are our aims,

First one is quite simple…working with Mike and Rina from Yume Koi Japan, sourcing the best quality koi and retailing them at the best possible price that reflects their true quality.

Sourcing true top-quality koi with future potential that can achieve jumbo sizes and considering all our customer’s different needs and sourcing the correct koi that reflects this.

Every koi while they reside here with us at Grey’s Koi will be conditioned and grown to their fullest potential…with the process being enjoyable as a bonus!

For our customers who show their koi, we have aspirations to supply them with koi that will win major awards at national level and shows throughout the country…with the goal of Grand Champion awards. We personally enjoyed showing our koi, so with the help of Yume Koi Japan we aim to still do this hopefully in Japan.

We also aim to select a percentage of koi each year, primarily Go-Sanke, with the sole goal to grow and develop them here at Grey’s Koi to over 80cm to show quality. The reasoning behind this being to first enjoy and learn from their development, to further increase our knowledge and to give hobbyist the opportunity to purchase a jumbo-sized Go-Sanke that hopefully still has plenty of potential, and at a competitive price.

We also aim to create a wholesale network throughout the country as we are registered with Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) CEFAS for fish movements here in the UK.  And our aim is to supply koi for the best price that reflects their quality.

Our business plan is certainly not an easy one and comes with risks, but we are committed to strive for this.

We are a full-time dealer, appointment only.
